CRAZY HORSE: UNRELENTING WARRIOR OF THE PLAINS
HE LIFTED UP HIS PEOPLE
HIS LEGEND STILL RINGS TRUE
HIS COURAGE, STRENGTH, AND WISDOM
MANY WARRIORS KNEW
THEY SAY HE HAD A VISION
OF WHO HE WAS TO BE
A PROTECTOR OF HIS PEOPLE
FOR ONE AND ALL TO SEE
A PEBBLE ‘HIND HIS EARLOBE
LIGHTNING BOLT ACROSS HIS FACE
HIS HORSE’S TAIL ALL TIED UP
SPIRIT WORLD’S GRACE
ARROWS PASS AROUND HIM
FROM DEATH HE HAS BEEN FREED
BULLETS COULDN’T HARM HIM
HIS VISION GUARANTEED
AND WHEN HE WAS IN BATTLE
A DECOY WARRIOR SOUGHT
HE SPRUNG THE TRAP ON EIGHTY MEN
AND ALL OF THEM WERE CAUGHT
GOLD SEEKERS STRUCK PAHA SAPA
ALONE HE WAGED A WAR
TO STOP THE BLIGHT FROM SPREADING
BEFORE LAKOTA WERE NO MORE
HIS DAUGHTER WHO WAS STRICKEN
A CHILD NO MORE THAN THREE
WAS CHASED DOWN BY AN ILLNESS
THE RED MAN COULD NOT FLEE
HIS SORROW TURNED TO ANGER
HE SANG HIS MOURNING DIRGE
A HEART NOW CHURNING ANGER
THE WHITE MAN IS A SCOURGE
THE HILLS WERE TAKEN FROM HIM
THEY TOLD HIM HE MUST GO
ONTO A RESERVATION
A LIFE HE DID NOT KNOW
HE LED HIS PEOPLE WESTWARD
ALONG WITH SITTING BULL
LOW DOG, HUMP, AND TWO MOON
THE OLD LIFE, RICH AND FULL
THEY GATHERED ALL TOGETHER
THE CHEYENNE AND THE SIOUX
ARAPAHOE AND OTHERS
THE VILLAGE GREW AND GREW
IT HAPPENED ON A SUNDAY
CAME THE MAN WITH YELLOW HAIR
POUNCING ON THE PEOPLE
MOST WOULD NEVER DARE
CUSTER THOUGHT THEY’D RUN
AND NOT STAND UP TO A FIGHT
BUT HE QUICKLY CAME TO KNOW
THIS TIME HE WASN’T RIGHT
FOR THERE WAS ANOTHER VISION
THAT QUELLED THE PEOPLE’S FEARS
DEAD SOLDIERS FALLING INTO CAMP
UPSIDE DOWN NO EARS
FOR SITTING BULL HAD TOLD THEM
WHEN HIS FLESH WAS CUT SO DEEP
THAT SOLDIERS WOULD BE COMING
FOR DAYS HE HAD NO SLEEP
NOW CRAZY HORSE TOOK COURAGE
AND GATHERED FIGHTERS STRONG
ROSE UP AND GRASPED HIS WEAPONS
AND LED THE DEADLY THRONG
WARRIORS STRUCK THE SOLDIERS
AND DROVE THEM FROM THE FRAY
KILLED YELLOW HAIR AND HIS BROTHERS
AND ALL HIS MEN THAT DAY
THE VICTORS LEFT THE FIELD
THE VANQUISHED STAYED BEHIND
BUT CRAZY HORSE’S DAYS WERE NUMBERED
HIS DEATH WOULD NOT BE KIND
AND WHEN HE DID SURRENDER
FOR THE LITTLE CHILDREN’S SAKE
HE WOULD NEVER FIGHT AGAIN
HIS LAND, THE WHITES WOULD TAKE
HIS PEOPLE HELD HIS ARMS BACK
AS HIS VISION TOLD
ONE SOLDIER THRUST A BAYONET
BLOOD WOULD SOON TURN COLD
HE SAID GOODBYE TO PARENTS
HIS DEATH SONG NOW WAS SUNG
HIS VISION WAS COMPLETED
A VISION SOUGHT WHEN YOUNG
HIS BODY, IT WAS HIDDEN
OR SO THE PEOPLE SAY
HIS RESTING PLACE A MYSTERY
KEEPING ENEMIES AT BAY
