DAY ONE - June 6th, 2025
7:00 AM - DEPART SHERIDAN, WY
We will then collectively travel in a van up the Reno Creek Road to an overlook at the divide. Here we will be a mile below the Crow’s Nest where the location of the village was first attained thirteen miles away on the early morning hours of June 25, 1876. Here begins our discovery and analysis of Custer’s fateful decisions as he approached annihilation. We will follow the footsteps of the Seventh Cavalry, traversing the very route of the ill destined regiment as they descended into an inferno of Lakota and Cheyenne rage. We will reveal the country where Captain Benteen clawed up one ridge after another on his scout to the left. We will visit the site of the morass, the lone teepee and Ford A where Reno crossed the Little Horn and rode into a deadly confrontation that will lead to chaos and doom. As we approach the end of day one of the tour, we will examine Reno’s actions in the valley fight, walking along his initial skirmish line and subsequent retreat into the timber. We will identify the location of the massive encampment and reveal the initial warrior reaction to the blackcoat's advance. If it can be arranged the day will conclude with an artifact presentation.
TOUR DAY TWO- June 7th 2025
8:00 AM - LBH BATTLEFIELD
We will assemble inside the LBH battlefield and travel out to the Reno/Benteen entrenchment area where Reno’s shattered battalion gathered as they escaped the valley disaster. Here Benteen and Reno’s men numbering around three hundred sixty clung to the barren hilltop. We will walk the interpretive trail viewing the path of accent the mauled command took in gaining the high ground, discussing the general leadership transition from Major Reno to Captain Benteen and the subsequent controversy of these officer’s actions on the embattled hilltop. Traveling on, we will ascend Weir Point and ponder the information perceived by Captain Thomas Weir. Now we examine the time table of the separate movements of the regiment, in an attempt to decipher the various theories addressing Custer’s demise. We will also discuss Weir’s retreat after Custer’s destruction. Continuing north, we will offer detailed accounts of events that occurred at Medicine Tail Coulee, Calhoun Hill, the Keogh sector, Deep Ravine, and Last Stand Hill. We will be constantly examining the terrain, survivor accounts and the artifact discoveries that promote a deeper understanding of what likely happened on that torrid Sunday afternoon. We will conclude the tour with a summary of the immediate aftermath of the battle and the resulting events which led to the total collapse of Lakota and Cheyenne resistance to reservation life. At the conclusion of the tour for those who wish to attend, we will have a debriefing session at the Trading Post across the highway from the battlefield entrance.
Sincerely,
Steve Adelson
